The Internet is an ever expanding network of computer networks which operates world-wide using a common set of protocols known as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

The Internet has two main functions

  • it is a means of access to information that may be stored on computers anywhere in the world
  • it provides a channel for the exchange of all sorts of information and for communication via email, discussion groups and chat rooms

We will focus on the Internet as a repository of information sources you can use in the course of your studies.
